I always thought I loved the 1990s, but over the past year or two, the 70s have really caught my eye. You can’t deny that the 70s is #ATimelessTrend to this day and where better to browse for modern-day inspiration than Chums?
Saturday Night Fever
Probably the most iconic movie from the 70s is Saturday Night Fever which I hadn’t seen until recently (shock, horror!). John Travolta’s legendary white flared suit makes me wanna grab a time machine back to those days and party down at a local discotheque (or Studio 54). Nothing sounds more glamorous (and problematic) than Bianca Jagger rolling into her birthday party on a white horse.
70s fashion stilled showed evidence of its 1960s sister from:
- Tie dye blouses
- Hippie chic earth mother hair
- Prints, prints and more prints (the wilder, the better)
Groovy Baby
Make up in the 70s was synonymous for natural brows, shimmer on the lid and lots and lots of gloss. There was a real glam ‘moody’ feel to it and nobody epitomised it better than Cher herself. Gone were the big lashes of the 60s, but on to even bigger hair…
You can’t even mention 70s hair without the legendary Farrah Fawcett with her feather cut and big flicks. Let us not forget the afro and frankly, the bigger the better. Even if you’re hair was short (Joanna Lumley rocked the ‘Pageboy’ cut), the 70s had a style for you whereas other eras focused on a particular length or texture of hair. What I do love most about the 70s hair is the fact that the colours were natural and instead of favouring a particular colour like peroxide blonde in the mid-90s, it was instead focused on subtle highlights. There was a real emphasis on ‘natural’.
Will flares and big hair return in a modern-world wanting things tighter and smaller? Watch this space, or peruse the fashion section of my blog here.
