Memoirs: 10 Hours in Toulouse

Some of the best trips happen when someone says ‘I’m coming’, actually books their flight and sends you evidence of their confirmation.

Can I get more friends like this please? Or is it going to be a solo 2019 too?

I actually intended on going to Toulouse solo but sometimes you gotta throw out the words ‘do you wanna come?’ in to the universe and see who responds.

2.15am – Uber from home to King’s Cross St/ Pancras

I arrived here way too early and King’s Cross/St Pancras station around this time of night is an interesting sight. From the partygoers making their way home from a night out to those *people* who only come out at night, remind me never to do this route to go the airport again. But for a £2.99 coach… you get what you pay for.

3.05am – National Express coach from King’s Cross St Pancras

[insert nap here]4.50am  – Arrival at Stansted Airport

WHY ARE THERE SO MANY PEOPLE HERE THIS EARLY? Oh yeah, early flights are the cheapest and apparently most convenient.

5.15am – Security!

Got through security and straight to Giraffe for breakfast. This is my usual spot in Stansted airport as the service is quick, and the food is decent.

6.15am – Announcements

The gate announced so off we went. It was such a weird feeling not to be pulling around any cabin baggage or be worrying they’ll weigh it at the gate…

7.15am – Sunrise

We took off with a gorgeous sunrise in tow heading to Toulouse…

‘Go where you feel most alive’. No idea who said this but I feel like it goes with delightful photo of the morning sky. 🌅 Anyway, time for 8/12! 10.10am – Short haul fun

We arrived in Toulouse and ready to eat, explore all things French for a day. We didn’t really have any places in mind we wanted to visit, which made the day trip that much easier. Sometimes travel can become exhausting when you’re trying to tick off a list of ‘must-see’ things to prove you were there. This links back to my post I wrote around this time last year about slow travel and there really isn’t any definition when it comes to travelling. It’s entirely subjective.

A rare photo of me on this blog…

Our first pit-stop was The Black Lion pub for brunch and after a quick CRB check on Google, I knew we’d be in good hands. What was interesting was how well everyone spoke English. I wondered if I was in London for a moment…

Next, Saalene and I headed down to Place de Capitole which is the Toulouse equivalent of Leicester Square. What I really love about France is how beautiful all the buildings are. When you think of a city, your mind goes straight to skyscrapers but France is more cobbled streets, shutters and details. Kinda like the opening scene of Beauty and the Beast.

I’m not sure where the time went but we strolled through the Toulousian streets, ate some more, took a little trip down the river and just soaked in another city for a few hours.

7.30pm – Back home…

We arrived back to the airport and realised our flight was delayed by an hour…

Meaning we’d be taking off at 10.30pm not 9.30pm. The downside of Ryanair is that they don’t notify you of these things and yes I could have checked the airport website beforehand but who remembers when they’re ‘lost’ exploring? I guess you get what you pay for right.

In the wise words of Luther Vandross, when it comes to travel, it’s NEVER TOU MUCH. Toulouse airport is pretty basic and overpriced… but if you have your portable charger you can keep yourself entertained for a few hours. Or bring a book for good measure if technology fails.

We ended up taking off at 11.20pm, two hours later than scheduled, meaning we’d definitely miss the last Stansted Express train back to London. Luckily it was a pretty empty flight, and I had a window seat, so I plugged myself in to the soothing sounds of Lana Del Rey and slept the flight away. I knew the nap was good when I woke up with a little dribble. If only I could see myself as I slept…

This is the last of my Toulouse photos but nothing like a blurry plane window shot to remind you the world is bigger than your present surroundings. Book the flight. Getting through passport control at Stansted is always LONG for some reason and I guess I wouldn’t be a Brit I wasn’t welcomed back home with a queue. 🙃

How to get home?

Airport express to Stratford (£10) and they leave every 30 mins. Or just cry and sleep in the airport until the morning when you can get home easily…

I eventually got back home at 2.30am turning my ten hours in Toulouse to almost 24 hours outside of my house but I wouldn’t change it at all. Having time to reflect the next day made me come up with a short pros and cons list of a day trip:

Pros

Cons

You won’t be able to fit everything in but again that depends how you travel. I like to explore the world at my own pace and I’m tired of the notion that I should be doing everything. I’ve lived in London my whole life and there is so much I haven’t explored. When it comes to travel, it should be about and the place in front of you, not a list of things you HAVE to do. To be honest I didn’t even know what Toulouse was famous for and you might think that’s a backwards way to travel but I see it as character building. You don’t have to actually want *want* to go somewhere at all.

Would you ever do a day trip to another city?

It looks like you had a fab time there. Toulouse looks beautiful – I love your photos. I agree, it’s nice travelling and sightseeing without having a checklist of things to go to! It’s nice being able to wander around and just find things randomly!
