Memoirs: The Letitia Sophia Make Up Masterclass

Last week I attended the Letitia Sophia Masterclass and if you’re wondering what that means, Letitia is a talented London make up artist and she held her own class at Smashbox Studios.

I’m all about self-improvement this year and one thing I’ve always wanted to do is go to a make up class. I’ve always browsed the ones on Groupon but the reviews never seemed that great. I didn’t want to commit to a course either as well you know I have work, travel and this blog that keeps me busy enough.

You might think, oh there’s YouTube, you can learn make up from there, but it’s not the same. Unless it’s a livestream or you can interact in some way, there is nothing quite like attending a make up masterclass in person. I’ve been to a few previously but more as part of a blogging event than a dedicated masterclass.

What drew me to book the Letitia Sophia Masterclass was that I’d actually booked her to do my make up for my brother’s wedding last year after endlessly scrolling through Instagram. There are so many talented MUAs out there these days but what made Letitia’s work stand out to me was that it was natural soft glam. It wasn’t too overly contoured, highlighted, concealed or shovelled on, it was perfect (to me). Letitia even revealed she wasn’t taught make up which is inspiring considering the pressure there is to have formal qualifications (in any field). Sometimes you have to wing it.

It included two special guests, TV presenter Maya Jama and Love Island’s Kaz Crossley and was held at the Smashbox Studios in Fitzrovia. Greeted with prosecco and nibbles, I couldn’t wait to see what I’d learn…

What I Learnt?

Without giving too much away, here are a few tips and tricks I picked up from the two looks Letitia created on Maya and Kaz.

“Do finishing touches at the end.”

This makes absolute sense. Rather than fixing up as you go along, wait until the end when you can see the full face.

When it comes to eyebrows, start mid-way, draw a line in the middle and blend to the end. Don’t forget to press upwards to get rid of the line.

“You are your best canvas.”

The best person you can practice on is you (and willing friends and family).

One or two eyeshadows are great for a quick look if you’re in a rush.

The B Brush Cleaner from Superdrug is great if you don’t have time to clean your brushes, but use the strong Fairy Liquid for a proper clean.

Use powder on shiny areas.

Use Tarte’s Shape Tape to blank out the eye when creating a bold look. Alternatively any concealer would work but make sure to use a powder to set it.

The mini-Beauty blends (damp) are great for blending under the eye.

Ask your clients their skin-type e.g dry, combination, oily, sensitive.

When it comes to social media:

Whilst I don’t want to be a make up artist, eventually I want to start my own beauty brand and its amazing how much you can learn if you put your mind to it.

At £183.99, this wasn’t the cheapest thing I’ve done in the name of self-improvement this year, but it was worth every penny. I can’t wait for the next one. Don’t get me started on the goodie bag either…

The Goods

Let us not forget the goodie bag which included brands like Huda Beauty, Glam Glow and Real Techniques which were used throughout the class. I’ve been wanting to try Huda Beauty products for the longest and now I have the Coral Obsessions palette (which is WOC friendly I should add), I can’t wait to get started.

Since leaving the class, it’s made me change a few steps in my routine, order some new Mac brushes (217 and 224) and bring you a whole heap more beauty content. You can check out Letitia’s YouTube channel here
