Memoirs: How I Did 12 Destinations in 12 Months Using My Annual Leave (Again)

At the end of 2018, I wrote a post detailing how I did 12 trips in 12 months using only 15.5 days annual leave and well I am very proud to say I have done it again. 2019 has taken my to places I never thought I would go and I guess that’s the beauty of being an open-minded traveller and letting go.

I usually visit somewhere based on:

Disclaimer: I started off with 28 days* annual leave at the beginning of 2019.

*Bank Holidays don’t count as I automatically get these off.

MY 12 IN 12 DESTINATIONS:

Eindhoven = 0 days leave (One day trip on a weekend)

Pisa & Florence = 1 days leave (Over a weekend)

Madrid = 1 days leave (Over a weekend)

Cambridge 0 days leave (Over a weekend)

Ibiza =  2 days leave (Backed on to a bank holiday)

Amsterdam 1 days leave (Over a weekend)

Dubai & Abu Dhabi = 4 days leave (Backed on to a bank holiday)

Berlin = 1 day leave (Day trip on a Friday)

Mykonos = 3 days leave (Over a weekend)

Tokyo = 6 days leave (utilised two weekends)

Other UK trips: Reading, Manchester, Windsor

= 19 DAYS ANNUAL LEAVE USED IN TOTAL

What have I learnt from doing this challenge again?

Always have a day off if you’re returning from a mid or long-haul trip.

Day trips are tiring.

– Me, A Tired Person

Day trips are a good way to get a taste of a place.

There is travel at home. Make sure to explore your home country too.

Book the flight. Tokyo was somewhere that was always going to be too expensive for me but I found flights for £340ish and well I had to book them.

Go solo. If you wait around for people, you will be waiting forever. There is a whole world out there waiting for you.

You don’t need to quit your job to travel the world. Just get creative with your annual leave.

Final thoughts

Am I going to visit 12 destinations in 12 months again next year? I’m not sure. I always say I want to slow down but whilst I’m “young” and travel for me is form of self care I can’t really say no. What I can do is change the way I travel which means doing everything on my terms; affordable but bourgeois.

What travel challenges are you setting yourself in 2020?

About Me

Welcome to my little space on the internet, known as Memoirs and Musings. I’m Char, short for Charlotte and my blog/website/diary is dedicated to documenting my Memoirs and Musings, hence the name. I wouldn’t say I was your ‘typical’ blogger either. I don’t care about getting the perfect flatlay or feeling bad for not posting, I just enjoy writing. If you’ve made it this far, thank you for reading. Anyway, I love to travel, indulge in a glass of white wine, when plans are cancelled and purchase overpriced make up.  I guess that’s me in a nutshell, trying to figure out this thing called life, have fun and never lose sight.
